Magnetic North East’s Kathryn Tickell invites a host of exceptional acts to Sage Gateshead for the organisation’s second major concert on 10th November 2017, 7.30pm (Sage One).
The evening will showcase the versatile nature of the region’s heritage, exploring cross genre collaborations, new commissions and an exciting new youth project from Thomas Walling Primary School in Blakelaw. Featured acts include spellbinding singer-songwriter Martin Longstaff of ‘The Lake Poets’, Northumbrian/Scandinavian fusion group ‘Baltic Crossing’, and Magnetic North East’s own youth band ‘Superfolkus’ featuring Kathryn Tickell. The Ouseburn valley’s Star and Shadow Rapper will top off the show with a dynamic display of the region’s own unique sword dancing and clog traditions.
The concert will celebrate the official launch of ‘Land of Three Rivers: The Poetry of North-East England’, a poetry anthology from leading publisher Bloodaxe Books. Taking its name from the title of a Vin Garbutt song, the book maps the region in poems relating to the North East’s past and present, depicting life from Roman times, through medieval Northumbria and the industrial era of mining and ship-building, up to the present day.
Magnetic North East is a community interest company, borne out of a love for the region: its music, arts, culture, heritage, places and people. Through its work, Magnetic North East celebrates and promotes the distinctive cultural identity of the North East of England, rooted in the region’s traditions but boldly exploring new creative opportunities.
The organisation’s online agency provides easy access for those wanting to hire traditional musicians, singers and dancers, or commission new works. All proceeds go towards sharing the region’s traditions through performance, teaching and publication.
